The Devil Tarot Card! So many negative connotations and associations, but sometimes a bit of devilment is just what the doctor ordered.
In this card from The Wild Unknown the cloven hoofed goat seems to have a wicked glint in his eye as he dares us to succumb to temptation and lures us into his lair to partake of “naughty but nice” pleasures. I’m thinking here of small indulgences like rich, velvety Devil’s Food Cake with lashings of whipped cream, or a monster bar of chocolate greedily consumed in splendid isolation!
It brings to mind cheeky and flirtatious “kiss me quick” hats from the bygone era of traditional seaside holidays, and striptease and burlesque artists teasing and titillating their audiences.
The picture on this card depicts a goat with what looks like fire licking around his hooves. This symbolises just how easy it is to overstep the mark when transgressing into the realm of The Devil card. When you play with fire it is easy to get burned, and this is graphically portrayed here. Something that is at first perceived as nothing more than harmless, sexy fun can become much darker and more sordid when obsession, lust, addiction and materialism are added into the mix. Suddenly we have the much more negative associations of temptation, like addiction, dependence, cravings and materialism.
This is when the dark and gloomy world that The Devil beckons us into can become a whole lot more seedy and sordid, and we must keep our wits about us if we are to emerge back into the light again and avoid the entrapment of his world.
Sometimes we all need a bit of a “devil may care” attitude, and a little naughtiness can be nice, but watch your step as you walk the fine line which separates this world from a much more shadowy place.
