This weeks card is The Devil. It speaks of a situation involving addiction and dependency; a feeling of being trapped in a mesh of self destructive negative patterns, which may feel difficult or impossible to extricate yourself from.
Usually when The Devil is involved we are fighting our baser instincts of lust, greed or survival. This creates a symbiotic relationship, a loss of integrity and an ugly compromise.
Often the allure of an addiction, bad influence or person can become all consuming, until it turns into an obsession or perversion which enslaves us and makes it almost impossible to conquer without help.
The temptation to sell your soul to the devil for something in the material world may be enticing, but know that if you play with fire you may get your fingers burned (or feet, in this case!).
Ask yourself the following questions as the answers may prove illuminating…..
- Where is my soul starved
- Am I desperate for freedom/expression/authenticity
- Have I traded my ‘self’
Sometimes throwing light on our negative patterns is the first step in gaining awareness of where we have become a slave to a person; substance; or way of being, behaving or feeling, and hence the way out of the web of entrapment.
Be careful who you get into bed with today (metaphorically speaking or even literally!) as it could lead to you having to make considerable compromises which don’t sit well with how you wish to live your life.
Partnerships formed with the wrong people for the wrong reasons will almost certainly come back to bite you in the future. Don’t allow yourself to form alliances which result in you giving your power away and becoming beholden and dependant on others. You may find that you have allowed someone to ‘hold your feet to the fire’ and that it is almost impossible to claw back this advantage they have over you at a later stage when you realise just what a huge compromise you have been required to make. The Devil can often see you trapped in a situation of your own making, unable to free yourself.

Today’s the day to cut yourself a bit of slack and indulge yourself with some hedonistic treats. Sometimes a little bit of what you fancy does you good! Go on…..be a devil and give in to whatever is tempting you. It’s my birthday today so I will probably be overindulging in some gorgeous Spanish tapas and a delectable chocolate or two which I received as a gift. What are you going to treat yourself to today?
Who is pulling your strings?
The Devil Tarot Card! So many negative connotations and associations, but sometimes a bit of devilment is just what the doctor ordered.
In this card from The Wild Unknown the cloven hoofed goat seems to have a wicked glint in his eye as he dares us to succumb to temptation and lures us into his lair to partake of “naughty but nice” pleasures. I’m thinking here of small indulgences like rich, velvety Devil’s Food Cake with lashings of whipped cream, or a monster bar of chocolate greedily consumed in splendid isolation!
It brings to mind cheeky and flirtatious “kiss me quick” hats from the bygone era of traditional seaside holidays, and striptease and burlesque artists teasing and titillating their audiences.
The picture on this card depicts a goat with what looks like fire licking around his hooves. This symbolises just how easy it is to overstep the mark when transgressing into the realm of The Devil card. When you play with fire it is easy to get burned, and this is graphically portrayed here. Something that is at first perceived as nothing more than harmless, sexy fun can become much darker and more sordid when obsession, lust, addiction and materialism are added into the mix. Suddenly we have the much more negative associations of temptation, like addiction, dependence, cravings and materialism.
This is when the dark and gloomy world that The Devil beckons us into can become a whole lot more seedy and sordid, and we must keep our wits about us if we are to emerge back into the light again and avoid the entrapment of his world.
Sometimes we all need a bit of a “devil may care” attitude, and a little naughtiness can be nice, but watch your step as you walk the fine line which separates this world from a much more shadowy place.
